Unganisha are a duo, combining the talents of Norwegian electronic artist Bernt Isak Wærstad and Kenyan musician and vocalist Labdi Ommes. With their first two singles, they minted a sound that is theirs alone. Aside from her distinctive voice, Labdi plays the orutu: a single stringed instrument which has traditionally only been played by men. Her performances are both subtle and vibrant, whilst Wærstad’s electronics are warm, rhythmic and sensual.

Unganisha is a Swahili word, meaning to unify or connect. It’s an extremely appropriate name for an outfit whose avowed intention is to bridge east-African traditional music with western experimental sounds and electronic club grooves. The fact the results work so beautifully is a source of delight. Heaven’s Lathe are very excited to be releasing two fresh recordings by this cutting edge duo.
