Composer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Somerset has played woodwinds with Clock DVA, collaborated with Don Was, and written songs for, amongst others, Roisin Murphy and Lady Blackbird.
Yet, his most inventive work is as Mzylkypop: a bewitching compound of cinematic funk, abstracted soul, and brass gilded art-rock. Spring 2024 saw the release of their second album ‘Threnodies and Ad hocs’, with contributors including Adi Newton and Stephen Mallinder.
“This giddy avant pop affair is more avant than pop..the sound of a very English paranoia“ – The Wire
“A genuinely groundbreaking and remarkable body of work” – Exposed
Now, Heaven’s Lathe proudly present a new Mzylkypop double A side of songs co-written with Dean Honer of I Monster who composed the electronic soundscapes.
‘Harry’s England’ is a lush, Bowiesque social satire, with delicious alto sax work from Somerset, and an assured vocal courtesy of Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory.
Meanwhile, ‘No Ordinary Raconteur’ is a blissful, space age torch song, with a vocal from Peter Rophone, that recalls the heady heights of Billy MacKenzie.
This is intelligent pop. It’s also music rich in emotion and built to last.
