Not a solo artist, but an amorphous collective, led by film director Ben Wheatley (Field In England, Kill List, The Meg 2) and music producer and song writer Simon Byrt (Emiliana Torrini, Black Milk). The music of Dave Welder seems to draw equally from the Radiophonic Workshop, early Detroit acid, mids 80s European cold wave, and the soundtracks of John Carpenter.
“As with all the best minimalist music, there’s a lot going on here: Welder’s soundscapes often mutate from the super-linear to the dizzyingly complex. Yet the experimentation is off-set by bursts of wild melody. It’s heady stuff.” – Totally Radio
“Splatters of manipulated beats, estranged slices of voice, melted chimes and scorched synthesiser motifs, all unfolding with a dream logic that staggers in and out of the dark.” – ATTN Magazine
Aside from releasing a plethora of work on bandcamp, Dave Welder have also recorded the score for Wheatley’s elliptical yet gripping sci-fi feature ‘Bulk’. In April 2025, they made their live debut at London’s Café Oto.
“Seated behind synths, laptops and MIDI controllers, they push out warp engine bass lines. Looped piano sequences and sampled soul vocals lift us out of the deep space odyssey, segueing into warmly discordant industrial spaces.” – The Wire
Heaven’s Lathe are excited to be releasing Dave Welder’s vinyl debut, comprising recordings that are as enigmatic as they are immediate.
