Comprising Cecilia Fage (Matt Berry & the Maypoles, Maps) and Jarrod Gosling (I Monster, Regal Worm), Cobalt Chapel create beguiling work that explores landscape, humanity and folklore.
Their second album ’Synthetic Orange’ was a captivating blend of curious influences and addictive melodies: their own brand of powerful electronic-laced psych-folk. It was chosen as one of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Albums of the Year, with Stuart Maconie calling it “My favourite album of the year… it’s fabulous.”
Now, Heaven’s Lathe are releasing two bewitching songs from this distinctive duo.
A Side: ‘Saint Jimmy O’ is a chilling electro-folk ballad, about the horrific bogeyman of West Yorkshire: Jimmy Savile. Inspired by disturbing 1960s b/w footage of the DJ leading a group of children down a hillside to the small village where he kept his caravan, as though he had cast a dreadful spell. With a title suggested by the author Ben Myers (The Gallows Pole, The Offing) the song sets Fage’s pure tones over a bubbling lake of electronics.
B Side: ‘Two Days Awake’ is a pulsing synth-led and folk-infused dance track, written after witnessing plumes of smoke rising over Marsden Moor: a catastrophic fire that burned for days and razed nearly 2000 acres of moorland.
